Gas logs sets consist of an open gas burner system with cement logs, typically cast from wood taken from a real wood burning fireplace.

Because gas log systems are "open", in that they are not enclosed with a glass front, they are often favored for their close approximation of a wood burning fireplace. They are also preferred in applications where the esthetic qualities of a real flame are desired moreso than heat output.
